Kristina (Keena) Van Horn, DVM, CVA
Co-Founder
Dr. Keena Van Horn brings more than three decades of veterinary expertise to Shenandoah Veterinary Associates, with a career spanning primary care, emergency, and referral medicine. A graduate of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, she began her career in mixed animal practice in New York before transitioning to small animal primary care and emergency medicine in Washington State.
For nearly twenty years, Dr. Keena co-owned Woodside Animal Hospital in Port Orchard, WA, where she doubled the practice’s caseload, led multiple facility remodels, introduced new services, and championed Fear Free handling techniques long before they became standard. Her leadership extended beyond medicine—mentoring young veterinarians and students, shaping client education programs, and guiding her team through both economic challenges and growth.
In 2017, she and her husband, Dr. Michael Van Horn, relocated to Virginia, where she has provided relief veterinary services for numerous clinics in the Roanoke and Lexington areas while dreaming of opening her own emergency hospital. Known for her compassionate, thorough approach, Dr. Keena has a special interest in behavioral medicine, internal medicine, and ophthalmology, and she is particularly fond of working with cats—though dogs are equally welcome patients in her care. She has also completed specialized training in acupuncture and endoscopy.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Keena is a breeder of Russian-Polish Arabian endurance horses and enjoys endurance riding, dressage, photography, reading, writing, and exploring antique malls. She and Dr. Mike are delighted to call Virginia home, where they have built a horse farm and a wonderful life providing care for the Roanoke animal community.

Crystal Mason
Director of Operations
A Roanoke, Virginia native, Crystal Mason brings more than 20 years of clinical expertise and healthcare leadership to Shenandoah Veterinary Associates. Before transitioning into healthcare technology and operations, she spent over 16 years as a clinician in the eye care field, building a strong foundation in patient-centered care and team collaboration.
Crystal’s career took a dynamic turn at Lumata Health, the country’s first tech-enabled ophthalmology care management startup. There, she played a pivotal role in architecting scalable operational frameworks from the ground up—helping expand the organization from 8 to more than 130 team members in just two years. She integrated innovative technology solutions and leveraged data analytics to improve patient outcomes, streamline workflows, and elevate operational efficiency.
She later served as Manager of Care Management at TimeDoc Health, where she led remote care teams and supported strategic growth initiatives during the company’s recognition as one of Time Magazine’s Top 100 Tech Healthcare Organizations in the World.
Crystal is energized by the opportunity to help build Shenandoah Veterinary Associates from the ground up. She brings proven expertise in scaling startups and orchestrating organizational excellence, and she is passionate about elevating emergency and specialty pet care while fostering a positive, compassionate workplace culture—for both the animals and the people caring for them.
Outside of work, Crystal enjoys spending time with her family and her three dogs—Hank, Indiana, and Lincoln. An avid football fan, she proudly cheers for JMU, Virginia Tech, and the Philadelphia Eagles.
